Master of Science Degree in Epidemiology:
Clinical Research Track

Program Description

For students interested in clinical research, we offer a specialized track within the MS in Epidemiology program. This program provides students with the skills and knowledge needed to design and conduct clinical research. The Clinical Research track allows students to concentrate their electives in the discipline of their research focus such as pharmacy, nursing, dentistry, or medicine. The student will acquire training in clinical research by writing a thesis on a clinical research project and by taking these clinical research course electives.

The curriculum includes courses in epidemiology, biostatistics, and informatics. Other elective courses are available in advanced epidemiologic methodology, research methods, advanced biostatistical analytic methods, and the epidemiology and prevention of certain chronic diseases and conditions. Other required clinical research courses can be taken in other schools, including medicine, pharmacy, nursing, and dentistry. Instruction combines both didactic and experiential learning. Students participate in seminars, analyze examples of clinical research, and get practice in applied clinical research and evaluation.

The track in clinical research is offered with the active cooperation of faculty from other departments in the university, in particular from the Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Dentistry, as well as the Roswell Park Graduate Division. The curriculum is thus able to draw from a variety of disciplines including epidemiology, medicine, pharmacy, nursing, dentistry, oncology, psychiatry, psychology, sociology, geography, biostatistics, management, law, nutrition, statistics, and computer science.

All students are required to complete a master’s thesis. The thesis provides the student with an opportunity to  identify hypotheses and to test them through the conduct of independent research. It provides an opportunity for an independent clinical research effort that demonstrates ability to identify a problem, to develop an appropriate research design, and to analyze and interpret data with the purpose of developing or testing a new solution to an issue with clinical relevance.
