About EEH

Our department focuses on understanding the determinants and prevention of disease, on the role of environmental factors in health and disease and how the administration of health programs can help implement this understanding.

We offer a doctoral and a master’s degree in epidemiology; our MS program includes a specialized concentration in clinical research. We also offer Master of Public Health (MPH) degrees with concentrations in epidemiology, environmental health and health services administration, as well as collaborative programs where you can earn an MPH and a medical, business, law, social work or pharmacy degree or an undergraduate degree in exercise science.

Additionally, our programs include a collaborative program with UB’s Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, the Medical Sciences Training Program (MSTP), leading to both an MD and a PhD.

UB courses in public health, hygiene, sanitation and disease prevention date back to the late 1800s. Our department was formally established in 1919 as the Department of Hygiene and Public Health. Over the years, the name changed to Preventive Medicine and Public Health in 1946, to Social and Preventive Medicine in 1967 and in 2014, we became the Department of Epidemiology and Environmental Health.
