Course Description

EEH 578 Epidemiology of Chronic Diseases

3 Credits, Spring Semester

Prerequisites: EEH 501, or EEH 500, or permission of instructor

Non-communicable chronic diseases (NCDs) are the major cause of global deaths and they are a priority worldwide to focus to improve global health as asked by the United Nations. This course will include a number of topics pertinent to the study of NCDs epidemiology and their associated risk factors and prevention. Students will also indirectly come to appreciate the commonality in the activities of epidemiologists, and will see a variety of epidemiologic methods in action as they learn the most up-to-date knowledge and research via expert instructors and exposure to most current literature. This course would allow students to become more marketable, in that they could speak to a variety of diseases/conditions that may be outside of their main area of interest. It would expand the exposure to epidemiology methods in an applied and practical way, as we would ask experts to especially include research methods as they cover the overall epidemiology of particular conditions. The course will help empower students to conduct related research. This course will provide graduate students in SPHHP the knowledge on the scope of the disease burden in the US and globally, the risk factors for major NCDs, latest research and key related epidemiologic research concepts and methods. Students will learn, practice and apply related concepts and methodologies via exposure to current literature and research experts and carrying out course projects. Guest lectures will be given by leading experts from the university and the field.
