Open to anyone in and related to the UB and Western New York community, the challenge is a mindful way to boost your healthy lifestyle and reduce stress. Sign up, track your steps and compete for great prizes.

Walk on your own if possible.
If you walk with another challenge participant, use the #SixFeet rule to keep the recommended distance between you.
Strictly MINIMIZE the number of people you walk with.
DO go virtual: walk at the same time but connect via chat or FaceTime.

What's the challenge schedule?

Each week of the challenge begins on Wednesday and ends the following Tuesday through April 30.

  • Week 1: April 1 to 7
  • Week 2: April 8 to 14
  • Week 3: April 15 to 21
  • Week 4: April 22 to 28
  • Final days: April 29 and 30

Should I participate individually or as part of a team?

Individual participation

If you want to participate in the 2020 Step Challenge, simply sign up. You don't have to join a team to participate. Click "Skip for Now" when prompted to join a team during the registration process.

Encourage one another to step boldly by signing up as a team! You can join or create a team once you've joined the 2020 Step Challenge.

  • Teams are made up of two or more people.
  • If you want to join a team, please make sure that you were invited to join it. Please do not join a team randomly.
  • If you don't have a team but would like to be part of one, you are welcome to join the UB SPHHP Team.
  • If you want to change the team you belong to once the challenge begins on April 1, you must request the change from a challenge administrator.
  • If you sign up and join a team, you are still eligible for the individual participation prizes.

How do I add my activity?

You can add your activity in one of four ways.

  1. Using a tracking device such as a Fitbit. Follow the instructions on the ChallengeRunner app or website to connect your tracker. For more assistance and troubleshooting, visit ChallengeRunner's Support Center and type your tracker brand into the search bar for more detailed information.
  2. Using a tracking app on a mobile phone such as Apple Health. Follow the instructions on the ChallengeRunner app or website to connect your tracking app. For more assistance and troubleshooting, visit ChallengeRunner's Support Center, and type your tracker brand into the search bar for more detailed information.
  3. Texting your step total. If you include your mobile phone number in your profile when you sign up for ChallengeRunner, you can text your step total to the number 1 (513) 393-8847. Include the final daily total in your text. Check back on the app or website for the update. You may need to sync or refresh to see the update.
  4. Adding your activity manually.You can also input activity by logging into ChallengeRunner (either online or on the app), choosing a log date, and entering your number of steps.

You have a seven-day grace period to enter your daily step count.

Which devices connect and sync?

ChallengeRunner can connect and sync with a variety of fitness trackers and apps, including Fitbit, Garmin, Google Fit Online, Misfit, Withings (Nokia), Omron, Polar, Strava, Apple Health, Google Fit Mobile and Samsung Health.

How do I connect my tracking device or app?

  • Login to ChallengeRunner with your account.
  • Click the “Trackers” button on the homepage of the challenge, or click on “Profile,” and select the Tracker tab.
  • Choose your tracking device/app from the dropdown list.
  • Follow the instructions to enable syncing to ChallengeRunner.

What happens if my steps aren't tracked correctly?

  • Smartphone fitness app: Log out of and log back into the ChallengeRunner app.
  • Fitness tracker: Sync your device using your manufacturer's app or website. Wait for the 15-minute collection cycle to complete.
  • If your data still doesn't show up on ChallengeRunner or is incorrect, use your browser to navigate to the tracker manufacturer's website (fitbit.com, garmin.com, etc.), log in with your ID and password, and make sure your data is being uploaded to the website.
  • Remember, your step data is NOT pulled from the your fitness tracker itself, it is pulled from the tracker’s website (e.g., fitbit.com, garmin.com). If you see 10,000 steps on your device and fewer or no steps on ChallengeRunner, synch your device, log into your tracker’s website, and check your steps. That should clear up almost all discrepancies.

How can I win prizes?

You'll have the opportunity to receive prizes like gift cards, AirPods Pro, Fitbits, UB swag bags and more! Winners will be announced each week of the contest with grand prize winners announced at the contest completion.

  • To be eligible for the random participation prizes, you must synch/submit your steps on a daily* basis.
  • Team data in the leaderboard is averaged by the number of team members. The top three teams with the highest step average will be qualified for the 2020 overall winning teams.
  • Participants on teams also qualify for individual prizes. 
  • Results for the winning teams and the top stepper displayed in the app are not final. Challenge administrators will confirm the results before announcing the final winners.

Want to have an opportunity to win even more prizes? Post pictures and/or videos of you (and your team) participating in the 2020 Step Challenge on social media. To participate:

  1. Follow the School of Public Health and Health Professions' social media channels (FacebookTwitter and Instagram).
  2. Post to any of those channels using the hashtag #UBStepsBoldly. (Make sure you set your posts to public so we can see them.)

For participants who need alternative access, the Step Challenge team will help you register and log your steps. Participants who need alternate access will receive a response in one to two business days. You can email us with the record of the number of steps for the week at sphhp-step-challenge@buffalo.edu. We will manually enter your steps and answer any additional questions you may have.
