The science of understanding health and disease in communities.

Epidemiologists play a fundamental role in preventive medicine and public health by providing an understanding of the determinants and distribution of diseases and the application of this information in the prevention of disease.

Training in epidemiology includes the study of epidemiologic research methods, biostatistics, and survey methods. In addition, training focuses on understanding the biological, behavioral, social, and organizational determinants of disease and injury.

Epidemiologists work in a variety of settings such as academic and government research; public health agencies at the local, state, national, or international level; health care delivery systems such as hospitals and managed care organizations; private research firms; and industry.

The Department of Social and Preventive Medicine offers a PhD degree in Epidemiology, a PhD degree in Community Health, an MS degree in Epidemiology and an MPH degree in the following concentrations: Epidemiology, Environmental Health, and Health Services Administration.
