MD/PhD Program

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I apply to this program, or what advantages does it offer me with an MD/PhD degree?
This program is directed toward helping the student prepare for a career in which they will excel as both an investigator and a clinician educator.

How long would it take me to complete the MD/PhD - dual degree program?
Requirements for the two degrees could theoretically be completed in a six-year period, although it is anticipated that most students will require at least seven years to complete the program.

What are my grading requirements in the MSTP [Medical Scientist Training Program] since this program is more difficult given the additional burden of seeking two degrees simultaneously?
MSTP students are expected to receive a grade at or above the 50th percentile for the class average in all Medical School Courses. In the Ph.D. component, students are expected to receive a letter grade of B+ or better in all courses.

What are my financial obligations to complete such a program?
The student's funding during MSTP is provided as a fellowship by the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences during the M.D. component and as a stipend by the individual departments during the Ph.D. component. The proposed fellowship for 2007-2008 is $20,000 and the Current Graduate student stipend range is $21,000 - 23,000.
