Master of Public Health
Program Description
The Master of Public Health program prepares students for public health careers by providing a comprehensive understanding of public health philosophy, as well as the practical knowledge and skills needed to address current and emerging public health issues. The MPH program is for health professionals with or without doctoral degrees and for individuals who through undergraduate study and/or experience have substantial interest in a career in public health. For information on recent graduates' research work, see the following webpage.
Public health is a problem-oriented field and these problems have multiple determinants, including social, behavioral, environmental, biological, genetic, and organizational risk factors. Solving public health problems requires a multidisciplinary approach. Epidemiology and health services administration are two such disciplines. Public health professionals with expertise in epidemiology investigate the incidence, distribution, and control of disease and injury in populations. Health administration occurs at all levels of organizations and includes a wide diversity of jobs, ranging from managing specific public health programs on a day-to-day basis to being a health policy consultant.
The MPH degree program can be completed in four semesters of fulltime study. The program consists of a core curriculum, additional epidemiology or health services administration concentration electives, a public health field training experience, and an integrative project.
The core curriculum offers courses in epidemiology, biostatistics, health care organization, the study of health behaviors, principles of public health, the biologic basis of public health, and environmental health. Other epidemiology courses include advanced epidemiologic methodology, research methods, advanced biostatistical analytic methods, and the epidemiology and prevention of certain chronic diseases and conditions. Other health services administration courses include program planning and evaluation, health policy, public health law, management for public health practitioners, managed health care, and strategic and operations management.
