and Functional Performance in Patients with Osteoarthritis. Arch

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most prevalent diseases in the
elderly. It was our hypothesis that OA leads to reduced function
of muscles about the knee. Fifty-nine patients with OA were compared
to 54 age-matched and sex-matched controls (age = 64.6 +/- 1.9 years
and 65.0 +/- 0.4 years, respectively). Walking time (50') was 40%
slower in patients with OA (10.8 +/- 0.6 sec). Dependency (1.24
+/- .04), difficulty (2.14 +/- .11), and pain (1.72 +/- .08), assessed
by the Jette Functional Status Index, were 50% greater for OA patients.
Maximal isometric strength of knee extension was 10.4 +/- 1.2, 13.5
+/- 1.5, 14.0 +/- 0.6, 14.0 +/- 1.6, 13.3 +/- 1.5Kg at hip angles
of 45 degrees, 90 degrees, 120 degrees, 150 degrees, and 180 degrees
respectively. The force-time integral for isometric knee extension
to failure were 674 +/- 64, 658 +/- 81, and 727 +/- 90Kg sec at
knee angles of 60 degrees, 90 degrees, and 135 degrees, respectyively.
Maximal velocities of muscle shortening during knee extension were
149 +/- 9, 141 +/- 9, 140 +/- 10, and 133 +/- 11 degrees/sec for
resistances of 1 to 5Kg, respectively. OA patients had less muscular
strength (50%), endurance (50%), and contraction velocities (60%)
than controls (p<.05, ANOVA). Patients with OA have equal reductions
in muscle function and functional performance (50%). (Supported
by NIDRR #H133A-80002).
