Occupational Therapy MS
Curriculum
A minimum of 36 credits of course work is needed to fulfill degree and graduation requirements for the M.S. in Occupational Therapy. The total of 36 credits includes required courses, electives, and the completion of a thesis. Students may complete elective courses from those within the Department of Occupational Therapy or take elective courses in related departments. Elective courses enable students to take advantage of the wide range of course offerings available at the University at Buffalo related to their area of interest. The distribution of required and elective courses depends upon the student's selected area of concentration and must be approved by the student's advisor as part of the program of study. The program of study normally takes two academic years to complete. Part-time options are available.
Coursework Required for Degree Completion
Course Descriptions
Students wishing to earn an M.S. in Occupational Therapy must complete the following core courses (16 credits). All courses are 3 credits unless otherwise noted.
- OTD 521 Introduction to Statistical Methods in Applied Research
- OTE 522 Research and Applied Statistics in Occupational Therapy (4 credits)
- OTD 532 Societal Limitations/Impact on Persons with Disabilities
- OTD 551 Occupational Behavior Theory
- OTE or OTE 699 Research Project (Thesis) Guidance (3 credits)
- Electives as Needed
- Although not required, RSC 540 Academic Writing and Presenting is strongly recommended
For a concentration in School Based Therapy/Early Intervention, the following additional courses are required:
- OTE 514 Advanced Evaluation and Treatment Principles: Infants
- OTE 515 Advanced Evaluation and Treatment Principles: Preschool Aged
- OTE 516 Advanced Evaluation and Treatment Principles: School Aged
- OT 507 The Art of Sensory Integration and Neuro Developmental Therapy
For a concentration in Physical Disabilities/Developmental Disabilities, the following additional courses are required:
- OTD 517 Principles of Occupational Therapy and Persons with Physical Disabilities
- RSC 610 Rehabilitation Environments
- Plus one of the following:
- PGY 527 Neurophysiology (4 credits)
- ES 500 Biomechanics of Human Movement
- PSY 513 Biological Basis of Behavior
- OTD 538 Cognitive Neuroscience
The program of study normally takes two academic years to complete. Part-time options are available.
For a Certificate in Assistive Technology, students are required to take the following two courses:(course numbers are subject to change):
- OT 530 Computer Access I: Adaptation for persons with Physical/Learning Disabilities
- OT 533 Wheeled Mobility and Seating
- And a minimum of two of the following courses:
