Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT)

Application Information

The Doctor of Physical Therapy program (DPT) is a 3 year graduate program.  Students who plan to enter the DPT program may apply after 3 years in the Exercise Science program or after they have completed equivalent prerequisites at another institution.

Applicants to the program must submit all of the items listed below by November 1st each year in order to be considered for the class that enters in the following August:

  1. A completed online application, including the essay.  Applicants do not need to list any courses taken at the University at Buffalo on the application.
  2. Scores from the Graduate Record Examination, taken within 5 years of the date of application. Note that only the general test is required and not any of the specific subject tests. Have the scores sent to school code: R2925 and department code: 0619.
  3. Two recommendation forms that should be completed by someone who can evaluate your potential as a physical therapy student.  Blank copies of the recommendation forms are available on this website. Students should print them out and give them to their evaluators, along with a stamped envelope addressed to: DPT program, University at Buffalo, 515 Kimball Tower, 3435 Main Street, Buffalo, New York 14214.
  4. Transcripts from any college or university that the applicant has attended, other than the University at Buffalo. If the applicant transferred into the UB Exercise Science program and was given credit for courses taken elsewhere and the credit appears on his/her DARS form, he/she does not need to send additional transcripts.
  5. TOEFL scores, taken within 3 months of the date of application, for any student for whom English is not the first language.

All applicants who are on track to complete the prerequisite courses and the General Education requirements of the university, prior to the start of DPT classes, will be invited to participate in an interview.  Applicants currently attending the University at Buffalo will be asked to complete a second essay.

Admission decisions will be made based on the following pieces of information:

  1. GPA in the prerequisite courses.
  2. Whether the admission requirement of a prerequisite GPA no lower than 3.0 with no course grade below a C, has been met.
  3. The GRE scores (Verbal, Quantitative, Analytical Writing).
  4. The recommendation forms.
  5. The on-line essay and the second essay.
  6. The interview.
  7. Ratings by members of the Exercise Science faculty (for UB ES students only).
  8. Experiences that the students have had, as reported in the essay(s), background information, recommendation forms and/or the interview.
  9. The TOEFL scores (if applicable)

Offers of admission will typically be made in February.  Before students will be allowed to begin classes in the DPT program they must indicate that they will be able to meet the Technical Standards and comply with the Essential Tasks required by the program.

Requests for admission deferrals are reviewed on a case by case basis. Admission deferrals to complete the Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science are NO longer granted.

Applicants to the DPT Program must maintain a 3.00(B) out of 4.00(A) grade point average to be considered for admission as well as a minimum C or better in all prerequisite coursework.

Applicants should be aware that repeating prerequisite courses may have an adverse impact on admission ranking.
