Interdisciplinary Research in Support of New Biomedical Discoveries

Speaker: Stanley P. Azen, Ph.D.
Preventive Medicine (Division of Biostatistics), Biomedical Engineering, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California

Dr. Azen is currently Professor and Co-Director of Biostatistics in the Department of Preventive Medicine at the University of Southern California (USC) School of Medicine. At USC, Dr. Azen was one of the "founding fathers" of the Graduate Programs in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Molecular Epidemiology and Public Health. In 1998, he was one of two recipients of the USC Associates Award for Excellence in Teaching, in recognition of his programmatic development and mentoring of students. Dr. Azen is also the Director of the Statistical Consultation and Research Center at USC. The Center is actively involved in the design, conduct and analysis of clinical trials in cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, gerontology and ophthalmology. Research studies range from the evaluation of vitamin B supplements on coronary artery disease to determining the prevalence and risk factors of ocular disease in Latinos.

Dr. Azen has published over 250 scientific papers and two textbooks. A recent scientific publication appearing in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported the benefit of a lifestyle redesign program in independent-living older adults. The study was reported on national radio and television, and has a Nielsen rating of 12.1 million people. Dr. Azen is also the founding editor and Editor-in-Chief of Computational Statistics and Data Analysis, the official journal of the International Association of Statistical Computing, published by Elsevier in Holland. Finally, Dr. Azen continues his career as a professional pianist, performing weekly at two well-known Pasadena restaurants. He has released two CDs entitled: "Regressive Moments" and "Timed Series".
