Field Trips

Erie County Public Health Laboratory

October 26, 2006

On Thursday, October 26th 2006, public health students attended a field trip to the Erie County Public Health Laboratories (ECPHL). They learned about the regional facility which services the seventeen counties of the Western and Finger Lakes regions of New York State.

Ms. Linda Garringer spent time explaining the workings of the lab and giving a tour of the facility. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and New York State Department of Health have designated the ECPHL as a reference laboratory for the Laboratory Response Network (LRN). The LRN is a federally mandated network of approximately 100 public health laboratories in the United States and was established by the CDC to respond to potential public health threats, including bioterrorism. The ECPHL has constructed a BioSafety level 3 laboratory (BSL-3) suite to safely contain, handle and test various biological agents such as anthrax.
