Field Training Opportunities at Sites Not Affiliated With the University at Buffalo or When Students are Paid

Procedures effective beginning Summer 2009 semester

Students may seek out field training opportunities at sites not affiliated with the University or where the student is paid. Students seeking such sites must get advice from their MPH Concentration Area Director as to the relevance and appropriateness of the opportunity for the student's concentration.

For sites where an affiliation agreement is not in place, such an affiliation agreement should be completed once the student brings the opportunity to the attention of the Concentration Area Director and before starting the field training. An affiliation agreement provides for insurance coverage. If after all reasonable and prudent effort is made to secure an affiliation agreement such an agreement is not or cannot be instituted in a timely manner, then a student may opt, upon due consideration with faculty advisement, to consider undertaking the experience and upon completion of the experience petitioning for a waiver of the credits using Form 6 Field Training Waiver of Credits for Current MPH Students - for Unaffiliated Sites and When Students are Compensated.

Paid field training/internships are not covered by the university's affiliation agreements. Students do not register for credit for either paid or unaffiliated experiences.

IMPORTANT: the field training is to be conducted as if the site were affiliated (see field training guidelines, procedures and forms). Students also need to stay in contact with their faculty advisor to monitor the experience, in particular if the experience is not local. To request a waiver of the credits, students need to complete Form 6 Field Training Waiver of Credits for Current MPH Students - for Unaffiliated Sites and When Students are Compensated.

You can find links to non-affiliated or paid internship opportunities on the "Current Students" page.
