MPH Program

MPH/MD Collaborative Program

The School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the School of Public Health and Health Professions offer a five-year program whereby medical students can obtain both Master of Public Health (MPH) and Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees.

Students should first apply to the School of Medicine. If accepted, then application to the MPH program can be made during the second or third year of medical school. Although application to the MPH program can be made prior to taking Step 1 of the USMLE, applicants to the MPH program are required to pass Step 1 of the USMLE before they can begin the program. Interested individuals should refer to the MPH program description for general program admission requirements and discuss their interests with the Associate Dean for Medical Education in the medical school.

For medical students, the full MPH program consists of 46 credits divided as follows:

Core MPH courses (20 credits for the health services administration concentration and 23 for the biostatistics and epidemiology concentrations): 20-23 credits
Concentration area courses (18 credits for administration and 15 for the other concentrations): 15-18 credits
Field training (SPM 544 or STA 544): 6 credits
Integrative project (SPM 630 or STA 630): 2 credits

Individuals with relevant prior experience and/or graduate education can request waivers for the field training and up to two additional courses.
