MPH Program

MPH/MD Multi-Award Degree Program

The School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the School of Public Health and Health Professions offer a five-year program whereby you can obtain both Master of Public Health (MPH) and Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees.

You should first apply to the School of Medicine. If accepted, then application to the MPH program can be made during your second or third year of medical school. You have to discuss your interest in the MPH program with the Associate Dean for Medical Education. Although application to the MPH program can be made prior to taking Step 1 of the USMLE, you are required to pass Step 1 of the USMLE before you can begin the MPH program. Refer to the MPH program description for general program admission requirements.

For medical students, the full MPH program consists of 46-47 credits depending on the concentration selected, 3 less than than usual because medical students need not take SPM 535 Biological Basis of Public Health.

Core MPH courses:
(20 credits for the epidemiology and health services administration concentrations and 23 for the other concentrations; SPM 535 Biological Basis of Public Health is waived for medical students)
20-23 credits
Concentration Area Courses:
(18 credits for administration, 19 for epidemiology, and 15 for the other concentrations)
15-19 credits
Field Training:
6 credits
Integrative Project:
2 credits

Individuals with relevant prior experience and/or graduate education can request waivers for the field training and course work, but the minimum number of credits required for the MPH degree is 43 credits (of which up to 10 credits can be transfer credits).
