Question: How do I use the Kimball Elavator Swipe Card System?
Answer: The elevator swipe card system controls access to Kimball floors 2 - 6, and the basement, during off hours, weekends, and holidays. The swipe card system grants faculty, students, staff and university personnel different levels of access during these times. [top]

Question: How do I find out about Computer Viruses and Security Threats?
Answer: In many cases, IT Services will notify School faculty of virus and security threats via email. This information will also be available through the Alerts page. [top]

Question: How do I perform a "Windows™ Update?"
Answer: Microsoft™ regularly notifies users of its operating systems and products of "critical updates." These updates correct product security and performance issues. Steps to perform these updates are listed out on the Alerts page. [top]

Question: I received an email message about a virus, conspiracy, or unlikely opportunity that requested I forward the message on to other users. How do I know whether this email is legitimate?
Answer: It is probably a hoax. Symantic maintains a list of known hoaxes. Check their list to see if something similar to the email you received is listed. If so, just delete the message. [top]

Computer and Network Support

Question: What does Computer Support include?
Answer: Anything to do with computer and peripheral hardware or software. For example: operating systems, anti-virus software, patches, memory upgrades, hard drives, new monitors, printer repairs, etc (additional information). [top]

Question: What does Network Support include?
Answer: Anything to do with data cables, routers, servers, disk quotas, accounts, email, etc. [top]

Question: How do I Request Computer or Network Support?
Answer: All requests for computer and network support should be made through the online request form. This service is available to all faculty and staff in the School of PHHP (additional information). [top]

Question: Do Graduate Students have Computer Accounts where they can keep folders and files?
Answer: The School of PHHP maintains a server on which graduate students have individual accounts. Undergraduate students typically do not have accounts on SPHHP servers. All graduate students have 100 MB (mega bytes) on the student server. [top]

Question: What should I do if I Can't Log On ... I Can't Use Email?
Answer: If you are on-campus, the best option is to ask a colleague to contact computer support using the online request form. If you are off-campus or if everyone is experiencing the same difficulties then contact Mike or Tim by phone. [top]

Question: What computer and network Facilities does the School of PHHP have?
Answer: The school has about 300 personal computers, 150 printers, 1 public PC lab, 4 graduate PC labs, ... (additional information). [top]

Question: How do I Request Website or Database Support?
Answer: All requests for website development and should be made through the online request form. This service is available to all faculty and staff in the School of SPHHP (additional information). [top]

Question: Who created the SPHHP Website?
Answer: The School employs a professional website developer who is responsible for site structure, look and feel, usability, accessibility, statistics, database development and Internet search visibility. [top]

Question: Who creates Departmental Web Pages?
Answer: Each department has one or more website developers who are responsible for the content and links for their respective web pages. These developers also contribute to Internet search visibility, look and feel and usability of their pages. [top]

Question: What Tools and Expertise are available for website development?
Answer: School and departmental website developers draw upon substantial expertise and are aided by a wide range of tools. [top]

Computer Labs

Question: Does the School of PHHP have any Public Computer Labs?
Answer: There is one Public Lab in Kimball 113 jointly maintained by the School of PHHP and the School of Nursing. The Public computer lab is available to all of the faculty and students in the School of PHHP and the School of Nursing. (additional Information). [top]

Question: Do graduate students have a "Disk Quota" so they can store their folders and files?
Answer: Yes, each graduate student within the School has an account on the "Student Server" and a 100 MB disk quota. [top]

Question: Do the Public Computer Labs have Online Printers?
Answer: Kimball 113 has 2 black and white printers that can be accessed from the personal computers within these rooms. There is no cost to use these printers at this time. [top]

Question: Does the School of PHHP have any UNIX Workstation Labs?
Answer: No - the Department of Biostatistics no longer maintains a UNIX Workstation Lab.

Question: Are there Graduate Student Computer Labs?
Answer: Yes - the Departments of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences, Rehabilitation Science, and Social and Preventive Medicine maintain Graduate Computer Labs. These labs are only available to the graduate students in their respective departments (additional information). [top]

Question: Can faculty Reserve Computer Labs for their classes?
Answer: Yes - public computer labs and graduate computer labs can be reserved by SPHHP faculty for their classes. Follow the links to find out how you can reserve these labs. [top]

Question: Does the School of PHHP have a Plotter?
Answer: Yes - the School has a Hewlett Packard 755C Color/Black and White Inkjet plotter. In order to use the plotter, Departments and Research Centers must buy in to the "plotter account" (additional information). [top]

Question: Does the School of PHHP have an Electronics Lab?
Answer: Yes - the School has an Electronics Lab available to faculty for coursework, research and graduate projects. Use of the lab is by reservation only (additional information). [top]

Question: Does the University provide any Free Software to faculty or students?
Answer: Yes - the University has a great deal of free software available to faculty and students. Supported platforms include Windows™, MacIntosh™ and Linux (additional information). [top]

Question: What is UBiquity Software?
Answer: The UBiquity program provides high demand software packages to university faculty and students. Software available through UBiquity includes: Minitab 13.1; Maple V Release 6; MathCad 8; AutoDesk; Netlibrary; eBook Reader and many other packages. To access this software you must install a "Citrix Client" must be installed on your PC and you must have a valid UBIT username and password (additional information). [top]

Question: How can I set up a secure off-campus connection to the University network?
Answer: With the Off-campus Virtual Private Network you can create a secure connection [via cable modem, digital service line, phone modem] between your personal computer and the University network. Off-Campus VPN allows you to manage email, file transfers, calendaring, and other applications in a secure manner (additional information). [top]

Question: Does the University provide free Firewall Software for my personal computer?
Answer: No - currently the University does not have free or price discounted Firewall software available to its faculty and students. We have listed out a number of popular commercial products (additional information). [top]

Question: Does the University provide resources for Online Course Development?
Answer: Yes - the University has Blackboard software for online course development (additional information). [top]

Question: Does the University provide a low cost Conference Call service for its faculty?
Answer: Yes - the University has an arrangement with AT&T to provide low cost conference call service to University faculty (additional information). [top]
