Microsoft "patches" its Windows Operating System and resident applications to correct important security and performance problems. Many personal computers with newer operating systems run an Automated Update utility. The Manual Update Procedure will work with any PC and operating system.

Manual Update Procedure [top]
- Open Internet Explorer
- Select "Tools/Windows Update" (on the menu bar)
- Select "Scan for Updates" (identifies which patches your computer needs)
- Locate "Critical Updates and Service Packs" (with the number of patches to be installed)
- Please install any/all patches
- You will be prompted to reboot your computer
- Please reboot now (patches do not take effect until you've rebooted)
- Once the computer has rebooted, please repeat steps 1. to 7. until the number next to "Critical Updates and Service Packs" is zero.

Microsoft also alerts users that there are patches ready to be installed.
- Observe the pop-up alert "there are new patches to be installed"
- Select the pop-up alert (initiates automated download and installation of patches - typically complete within a few minutes)
- You will be prompted to reboot your computer
- Please reboot now (patches do not take effect until you've
rebooted)
