BUFFALO, N.Y. — Dori R. Marshall, MD, assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo, has been appointed director of admissions and assistant dean.

Marshall, who is board certified in psychiatry and neurology, is an alumna of the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and completed her residency at UB as well. She earned her bachelor’s degree at UB, magna cum laude.

At Erie County Medical Center (ECMC), Marshall serves as associate clinical director of psychiatry, overseeing the hospital’s 136-bed psychiatry unit, and teaching and mentoring medical students, residents and fellows. A member of the Education Policy Committee of the UB Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Program, she also is a physician with UBMD Psychiatry.

Marshall serves on ECMC’s ethics committee and teaches an ethics seminar to medical students during their psychiatry clerkship. She is involved in the medical school’s Human Rights Initiative, collaborating with medical student scribes to conduct forensic interviews of victims of torture seeking asylum in the United States.

A member of the medical school’s admissions committee since 2011, she chairs the school’s Faculty Council Committee on Admissions Policy. In her new role as director of admissions, she is committed to continuing the school’s emphasis on taking a holistic approach to screening and interviewing prospective students.

“Whether screening applicants to determine whether or not to offer an interview, or interviewing applicants, or engaging in the final discussion regarding whom to select for admission, the overall process studies each applicant as a unique individual, and endeavors both to understand the applicant’s passion and motivation for a career in medicine, and to appreciate the diversity each applicant brings,” Marshall said. “As the director of admissions, my goal is to lead and support the admissions committee as it carries forward in this mission.”

Marshall lives in Amherst.
