Dr. Don Rowe, director of the Office of Public Health Practice at the University at Buffalo SUNY School of Public Health and Health Professions, has been appointed chair of the New York State Rural Health Council (NYSRHC) by Governor Andrew Cuomo. The NYSRHC strives to ensure that a high-quality healthcare system exists equitably across New York State.
As chair, Dr. Rowe will work with the state’s Office of Rural Health to identify rural health issues, bring them before the NYSRHC, and advise the state commissioner of health on the council’s recommendations. Topics for the council’s consideration this year include the impact of the rapidly changing health care system on rural health; recruitment and retention of health care professionals in rural communities; how to assure the financial viability of rural hospitals; and how rural health networks are vitally important contributors to the health of the communities they serve.
