Emma Reed

Janet Austin.

Emma Reed is currently a graduate student in exercise science at the University at Buffalo School of Public Health and Health Professions.

How did you become interested in exercise science as your field of study?

My interest in exercise science was sparked in my undergrad exercise physiology class when I learned about the protective benefits that exercise had on our bodies. I always knew exercise was good for you but that class went to a deeper level that really grabbed my attention.

Why did you choose UB?

I chose UB because it offered a new opportunity for me to learn more about the expansive field of exercise science and because of the many opportunities to get involved in research.

Tell us more about your experience in the exercise science program.

My thesis project is on the effect of energy drink consumption on performance and thermoregulation in the heat. Energy drink consumption is very popular, especially among emergency responders who are exposed to heat, but little is known about whether consumption of energy drinks do more harm than good and vice versa when consumed in a hot environment.

What do you enjoy the most about the exercise science program?

I enjoy all the enthusiasm! Everyone here seems to be very passionate about their role in the program and personal interests. I feed off the enthusiasm which makes me excited about my future in the field.

How does receiving a degree from UB SPHHP set you apart?

I think the individuals I get to learn from and work alongside will certainly set me apart. I feel very grateful to be surrounded by a supportive and enthusiastic department.
