Summary

I earned my PhD at McGill University (1984, Montreal, Canada), where my research centered on the myogenic plasticity of the respiratory system to chronic lung disease and exercise. Post-doctorate training at the University of Virginia (1983-1986, Charlottesville, Virginia) and Erasmus University (1986-1987, Brussels, Belgium) centered on the mechanical interactions of the various inspiratory and expiratory muscles. Prior to joining the faculty at the University at Buffalo in 1994, I was a member of the Thoracic Research Unit at the Mayo Clinic (1987-1994, Rochester, Minnesota) where my research centered on plasticity of the respiratory apparatus in obesity, laying the foundations for my current interest.
