Michalek is a member of the Seneca Nation of Indians Health Commission, Society for Epidemiologic Research, American Association for Cancer Education (in which he has served as Vice President; President-elect; President), American College of Epidemiology (member Ethics & Standards Committee/Newsletter Editor), National Cancer Institute (NCI) Network for Cancer Control Research Among American Indian and Alaska Native Populations, and the National Cancer Leadership Initiative for Native Americans.

Currently, he serves as a reviewer on numerous NIH and NCI grant committees. He is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Cancer Education; also an affiliate including but not limited to: Annals of Epidemiology, Cancer, Cancer Practice, Epidemiology, Health Education Quarterly; International Journal of Epidemiology; Open Journal of Epidemiology (editorial board); Journal of Family Practice; Medical Care; past editorial board member of the Journal of Surgical Oncology; Preventive Medicine; Tobacco Control-An International Journal.
