A variety research studies are currently being undertaken in the Biomechanics of Human Movement (BHM) Laboratory which is predicated on the School of Public Health and Health Professions mandate of addressing public health issues related to aging, inflammation and chronic diseases.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most prevalent rheumatic diseases and knee OA is the leading cause of functional disability. The incidence of knee OA is predicted to increase, which correlates with increased obesity rates as the population ages. Pain and instability are the common complaint, limiting functional performance and quality of life. Not only consequent for the individual, osteoarthritis is a considerable burden to society because of its chronic course and the high costs associated with treatment interventions, which are important public health issues. Consequently there is a need for improved methods in treating the disease as well as understanding the mechanisms of progression.
