Frequently Asked Questions

Apart from the questions and answers listed below, prospective students are encouraged to refer to the Frequently Asked Application and Admissions Questions for Graduate study at UB (www.grad.buffalo.edu/admissions/faq.php).

Q. What background do I need to apply?

A. You should have courses in general biology, nutrition, and chemistry (both inorganic, organic and biochemistry), and physiology. You do not need a degree in nutrition.

Q. Do I need to take the GRE’s and is there a minimum score?

A. Yes, but you do not need to take any specialized tests. We do not have a minimum score; the results are used to evaluate your potential. The TOEFL must be above 549 paper or 212 cpt (computer based).

Q. What if I don’t have all the prerequisites?

A. You could take prerequisite courses as a graduate student, but this will lengthen your plan of study.

Q. When do I need to apply and how long will it take to find out if I was accepted?

A. You can apply year-round (and be accepted either in the fall-the preferred starting semester, or spring). We use rolling admissions, which means we evaluate your application after it is complete and inform you of our decision within the month. If you wish to be considered for teaching assistantships you need to be accepted by early April.

Q. Is there financial assistance available?

A. In addition to University-based assistance, we have Teaching Assistantship positions that are awarded on a competitor basis. We also have a scholarship program, the Rachmann Scholarship, that is also awarded on a competitive basis.

Q. What career opportunities do graduates of the program pursue?

A. Most students go on to further studies, such as doctoral programs (PhD), medical school and other advanced healthcare professions. Some are employed as nutrition professionals in healthcare and industry, or use their degree for advancement of their present occupation.

Q. Does this degree lead to becoming a Registered Dietitian?

A. No, by itself it does not, but it can be part of the Dietetic Internship program in Nutrition. To be admitted to the Internship program students must fulfill the requirements for admission (see the Dietetic Internship site).
