Exercise Science MS
Frequently Asked Questions
Apart from the questions and answers listed below, prospective students are encouraged to peruse the Frequently Asked Application and Admissions Questions for Graduate study at UB (www.grad.buffalo.edu/admissions/faq.php).
Q. What undergraduate degree is required for entry into the masters program?
A. An undergraduate degree in exercise science
is desirable, but not required.
You should have a science background with courses in general chemistry,
physics, exercise physiology, anatomy and calculus. Additional courses
in biology and physiology are an asset.
Q. Do I need to take the GRE’s and is there a minimum score?
A. Both domestic and international students need to take GREs. International students are also required to take the TOEFL. You do not need to take any specialized tests. We do not have a GRE minimum score, the results are used to evaluate your potential. The TOEFL must be above 549 paper or 212 cpt.
Q. Can I apply even if I am missing some prerequisites?
A. Yes. You can make up some deficiencies, but these need to be minimal in number and completed within the first year of study. Consider doing them in the summer if you are applying for entry in the fall semester.
Q. When is the application deadline and how long before I can expect a reply?
A. You can apply year-round (and be accepted in the fall - the preferred starting semester, or spring). We use rolling admissions, which means we evaluate your application after it is complete and inform you of our decision within the month. If you wish to be considered for a teaching assistantship you need to be accepted by early April.
Just a reminder for international students that sufficient time is required to secure students' visas, so early application is strongly recommended.
Q. Is there financial assistance?
A. Aside from University-based assistance, we have Teaching Assistantship positions that are awarded on a competitive basis.
Q. What career opportunities do graduates of the program pursue?
A. Most MS students use their degree as a stepping stone, and go on to further studies, such as doctoral programs (PhD), medical school and other advanced healthcare professions. Some are employed as exercise professionals in healthcare or industry or use their degree for advancement of their present occupation. It is possible to continue on for your PhD at UB after completing your MS (with Thesis).
