Four-Year BS Programs
General Exercise Science
The General Exercise Science (ES) track is our core program. It is ideal for those seeking employment in areas such as: cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, strength and conditioning, corporate fitness, community health and wellness, personal training, and health coaching. This track is also excellent preparation for students wishing to advance to our MS and PhD programs in Exercise Science. Once students have completed the lower division prerequisites (2 years), they must then apply to the upper division of Exercise Science by completing the Promotion to Professional Sequence application (due by January 31st). Once admitted to our upper division, students choose 9 credits of electives to supplement their area of interest. The program culminates with a one-semester, 12-credit internship experience. Often, these internship experiences lead to employment. The general ES track can also be used for pre-professional preparation in other health professions such as Chiropractic and Physician Assistant programs (with appropriate course selection of electives).
Exercise Science with Nutrition Concentration
The Exercise Nutrition track has the same prerequisites, admission, and retention standards as our general ES program (To apply for the Exercise Nutrition track students should indicate this choice when applying to upper division). Additional courses are completed in Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Nutrition. This track is excellent preparation for Medicine and Dietetics!

Five-Year Combined BS/MS Programs
BS/MS in Exercise Science & Nutrition
The BS in Exercise Science/MS in Nutrition program allows the students to combine two areas that are at the forefront of the efforts to reduce the incidence of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, obesity and diabetes. In the first 2 years of the program, students complete lower division prerequisite courses. Students then apply to be accepted into the upper division of ES. Once accepted into the upper division, students are eligible for acceptance into the BS/MS program (must complete a supplemental application). For more details on the curriculum, application info, etc. please visit the BS/MS program website. This program is an excellent option for those students preparing for Medicine, Physician Assistant, and Dietetic programs; and wanting to obtain a Masters-level degree.
BS/MPH in Exercise Science/Public Health
The BS in Exercise Science/MPH (Epidemiology) program focuses on the relationships between exercise and the prevention of chronic diseases from a population and community based perspective. Students completing the program will be able to integrate a solid scientific foundation in Exercise Science with a background in epidemiology, public health, program planning, and evaluation using physical activity as intervention, prevention, or health promotion modality.
Epidemiologists play a fundamental role in preventive medicine and public health by understanding which variables in human situations influence the determination and distribution of diseases. Epidemiologists investigate the incidence, distribution, and control of disease and injury in a population.
Epidemiologists work in a wide variety of settings including public health agencies at the local, state, national and international level; health care delivery systems such as hospitals and managed care organizations; private research firms; pharmaceutical companies; and academia.
For more information about the MPH program please contact Dr. Carl Li, Director of Graduate Studies for Social & Preventive Medicine.
Pre-Physical Therapy Track
Students who are accepted into this track are eligible to apply to the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program after completing the first 3 years of the general ES program (this provides ALL the prerequisite courses needed for the University at Buffalo’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program). Once students have completed the lower division prerequisites (2 years), they must then apply to the upper division of Exercise Science by completing the Promotion to Professional Sequence application (due by January 31st). Those accepted to the upper division of the ES program complete one more year of upper division prerequisites prior to entering the DPT program, if accepted. In the third year of the ES program, students must submit an online application directly to the Physical Therapy program before the November 1st application deadline. Those students accepted into the DPT program will have 3 additional years of graduate school to complete the program. Students also have the option to complete their B.S. degree in Exercise Science prior to entering the DPT program. Those interested in this track may wish to review the DPT curriculum.
