Athletic Training BS/MS
Curriculum
Requirements Once Admitted to the Athletic Training Program
General
- Students begin the BS/MS in Exercise Science (Program for Athletic Training) program with Gross Anatomy in May following the sophomore year.
- Students complete a course named "Introduction to Athlete Emergency Care" in the week after Gross Anatomy and before reporting for pre-season sports.
- Required clinical hours must be logged in the training room each semester, and appropriate progress toward completing clinical competencies must be maintained.

GPA Requirements:
Students must continue satisfactory academic progress to maintain good standing within the Athletic Training Program. Satisfactory progress and consequences for failure to satisfy these requirements are as follows:
- Students must maintain an overall 2.8 undergraduate Exercise
Science GPA and an overall 3.0 graduate Exercise Science GPA.
Failure to maintain either of these requirements results in being
placed on probation within the program. Students failing to achieve
the required GPAs for a second consecutive semester will be dismissed
from the program.
- Students failing to achieve a semester GPA of 2.5 for undergraduate courses, or 2.8 for graduate courses, will be placed on probation regardless of the overall GPA.
- Students failing to achieve a minimum semester undergraduate GPA of 2.0 or graduate GPA of 2.25 will be dismissed from the program, regardless of the overall GPA.
- Students must achieve a minimum score of 80% on all competency or proficiency-based practical exams. Failure to achieve an 80% on any practical exam (one re-take only) results in dismissal from the program at the end of that semester.
- Students must achieve a "satisfactory" (i.e. 80%) on all clinical performance evaluations. Failure to achieve a "satisfactory" score on performance evaluations results in dismissal from the program.
- Students must achieve a "C" or better in all undergraduate courses and a "B-" or better in all graduate courses. Students failing to achieve these requirements must repeat the course in question.
Note: Students can also be put on probation or dismissed from the program for conduct considered unethical for the athletic training profession or for gross breach of the UB Athletic Training Professionalism Policies (see Student Handbook). Students will be notified in writing of their probation or dismissal status.
Appeals:
Decisions that affect a student’s status within the Athletic Training Education Program (i.e. non-acceptance, probation, or dismissal), can be appealed by presenting (in writing) strong rationale to support the case. The Athletic Training Admission/Retention Committee will review the case and respond in writing to the student within ten business days (if the appeal is received during the regular semesters). If the appeal is received during the summer or other holiday break, the response will be given as soon as at least 80% of the committee can be present. Students can request that the Department Chair also review the case. If satisfactory resolution is not achieved for this, or any other dispute, the student should follow the procedures outlined by the University Grievance Policies. (See the Athletic Training Student Handbook for additional information on Program and University Grievance Policies).
