The following information applies to all students in SPHHP, which includes students in the masters of public health degree program and the following departments:

  • Department of Biostatistics
  • Department of Exercise & Nutrition Sciences
  • Department of Rehabilitation Science
  • Department of Social & Preventive Medicine

The 2008 School of Public Health and Health Professions Commencement Ceremony will take place at the Center for the Arts (North Campus) on Saturday, May 10, 2008. It is imperative that all graduates arrive by 12:00 noon and report to the Drama Theatre, Center for the Arts (follow the posted signs). Please locate your program area (as identified by signs) and report to your program director immediately for check in. You will receive further information at that time. The ceremony will begin promptly at 1:00 p.m. and is expected to last approximately 2 hours. A congratulatory reception for graduates, family, and friends will immediately follow the ceremony in the Atrium of the Center for the Arts.

Cap & Gown Information

Commencement attire is REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor and Master degree candidates must purchase appropriate academic cap, gown, and colored tassel at the UB Bookstore on the North Campus between March 3 and May 11. The Master order includes a hood.
  • Doctorol candidates must purchase appropriate academic regalia at the UB Bookstore on the North Campus between January 28 and March 3. Doctoral orders can be placed after the March 3 deadline; however, availability of the correct hood color can not be guaranteed.

Tassel colors:

  • PhD: Blue
  • DPT: Teal
  • MPH Public Health: Salmon
  • Masters: Epidemiology, Epidemiology & Community Health: Salmon
  • Masters: All others, Sage Green
  • Undergraduates: Sage Green

Q. How long is the ceremony?

A. The ceremony is approximately 2 hrs.

Q. What time do I need to get there?

A. It is imperative for graduates to arrive by 12:00 noon for check in.

Q. I am a doctoral student and have a hood. Do I put it on when I robe?

A. Doctoral students' will be hooded on stage by their major professor. Please drape your hood over your arm when you are called up to the stage to receive your certificate.

Q. What side does my tassel go on?

A. Tassels start off on the right side. When you are asked to approach the stage to accept your certificate, you will be directed to move them to the left.

Q. Is there a limited number of guests that I can bring?

A. There is no limit as to the number of guests that you can bring; however, seats are available on a first come, first served basis.

Q. Is handicapped seating available?

A. Yes; handicapped seating is available. Elevators are located in the first hallway on the right when entering the main entrance of the Main Stage Theatre.

Q. I am bringing a guest to graduation that is hearing impaired. Will there be an interpreter?

A. Yes; arrangements have been made to have an interpreter present at graduation.

Q. Where can I find information for assisting my family/friends in making travel arrangements such as travel directions, hotel or motel information, or dining in the Buffalo area?

A. For assistance in making a trip to the University at Buffalo and metro Buffalo enjoyable, visit http://www.buffalo.edu/directions/ for specific and individualized arrangements ranging from travel to restaurants to lodging to site-seeing.

Q. Do I need to attend University Commencement?

A. No. University Commencement will award degrees only to undergraduates in the College of Arts and Sciences, as well as all candidates for Associate Degrees.

Q. What color tassel should I have?

A. If you're getting a masters degree in public health (MPH), you should get a salmon-colored tassel. Doctoral candidates should receive a blue tassel. Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) should receive a teal tassel. Everyone else should receive a sage green colored tassel.

Q. What information do I need to communicate to the Book Store to ensure I get the correct robe/tassel/hood colors?

A. You need to give the full name of the school: "School of Public Health and Health Professions"
