Sindhuja Sridharan is a current student in the Bioinformatics and Biostatistics MS program.

How did you become interested in biostatistics/bioinformatics?

Learning gives me a great sense of accomplishment and a tremendous amount of satisfaction. My interest in bioinformatics and biostatistics was sparked in my undergraduate courses in bioinformatics. My interest was further sparked when I attended a talk given by a renowned professor during a symposium.  His talk greatly inspired and motivated me to continue my studies in this field.

Why did you choose UB?

I chose UB because it is a premier University. It is also recognized as a top destination school for international students like myself. UB has a strong academic reputation and is very affordable, which provided me with a new opportunity to learn more about the expansive field of Bioinformatics.

Tell me about your experience in the Bioinformatics and Biostatistics program?

I am currently a teaching assistant (TA) in the Statistical Data Mining course.  I consider this a once in a lifetime experience because I am able to review the material while also building relationships and sharing knowledge with other students.  This hands-on learning really helps me retain information much better than traditional lectures or course work.  I am also working under Dr. Rachael Hageman Blair, for my master’s project.

What do you enjoy the most about the your program?

The most enjoyable aspect of the program is the profound sense of belonging in a group of passionate people who challenge and support one another. Those relationships help me grow as a student. The professors are also very supportive and approachable. They have experience in working as professionals in the biostatistics field and by sharing these real-life experiences, they provide me with a better understanding of my expectations for the future.

How does receiving a degree from UB set you apart?

UB is one of the top public universities in the world!  I strongly believe that obtaining a degree from UB SPHHP will definitely set me apart from other students in my field.
